Art and Migration Converge at Gateway Korean Festival
Gateway Korea Foundation invites public to artist reception, lectures

St. Louis, Missouri (March 20, 2017) – As immigration laws and travel bans continue to dominate the news, it’s a good time to reflect on how migration – the moving of people from one region to another for a better life – marks part of human history, and certainly American history. Visual artist CYJO, who was born in Korea but raised in the U.S., addresses migration and the evolution of identity and culture in her photographic and textual portrait called KYOPO, which she will present at the annual Gateway Korea Foundation’s annual Dano Spring Festival in St. Louis.
CYJO’s photographic series profiles over 200 people of Korean ethnicity, and includes excerpts from interviews on a myriad of topics – including adoption, generational expectations, and civic activity. KYOPO was exhibited at The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in 2011 and 2012, and select portraits are now in their permanent collection.
“The word kyopo in Korean means a person of Korean descent who is living outside of Korea,” says Young-Hie Nahm Kromm, architect and principal at Kromm, Rikimaru and Johansen, Inc. and chairman of the board of Gateway Korea Foundation. “I myself am kyopo, and am intrigued with the artistic view that CYJO brings to issues with migration and assimilating into American culture. We are very lucky to have her as part of our Dano celebration.”
Dano is a traditional Korean holiday celebrating the end of sowing season. This year’s Dano Festival features the following events:
